  1. 1628-1688. English author. A Baptist, he was
  2. imprisoned in Bedford 1660-72 for unlicensed
  3. preaching. During a second jail sentence in
  4. 1675 he started to write Pilgrim's Progress,
  5. the first part of which was published in
  6. 1678. Other works include Grace Abounding
  7. 1666, The Life and Death of Mr Badman 1680,
  8. and The Holy War 1682. At 16, during the
  9. Civil War, he was conscripted into the
  10. Parliamentary army. Released in 1646, he
  11. passed through a period of religious doubt
  12. before joining the Baptists in 1653. In 1660
  13. he was committed to Bedford county jail for
  14. preaching, where he remained for 12 years,
  15. refusing all offers of release conditional on
  16. his not preaching again. During his
  17. confinement he wrote Grace Abounding
  18. describing his early spiritual struggles. Set
  19. free in 1672, he was elected pastor of the
  20. Bedford congregation, but in 1675 was again
  21. arrested and imprisoned for six months in the
  22. jail on Bedford Bridge, where he began The
  23. Pilgrim's Progress. The book was an instant
  24. success, and a second part followed in 1684.
